Landfill Sites Email to Tony Blair March 2002 (22)

Dear Tony,

I know there are seemingly more important or pressing issues at the moment, ( It's probably a fact that there always will be), but I'm very concerned about the landfill sites - and basically burying away all our mess - and contaminating areas of land - our planet.

It just needs a dedicated team, someone like yourselves, to get things going - we can recycle a lot of things and cut the filling in of land with our rubbish quite dramatically - if we suppose that cartons (look inside your bin) - most of the things can be recycled. Maybe only a small fraction really needs to be buried in the ground. A lot of the stuff in bins is paper - or tins...or plastics which can be collected... - (I'm in the world of design - I'm sure this material can produce innovative design solutions - we can use recycling to our advantage)

It's not really good enough to just carry on finding new sites and burying it all. I think everyone should get together more and take up the responsiblity together to do something about this - not just those who routinely recycle - I think it should be built into our lives more - it's just we don't see it - the mess - the land fill sites - people should visit them. For example, we don't like to see dog poop on our streets - well...

I was in a dilemma... Ever since I started working in an architect's firm about a year and a half ago - I didn't feel I could speak out... I couldn't force my views of recycling on everyone at work because it's just not the sort of thing a new recruit does - it's not part of the job description... So everyday I just watched, as we threw away all our waste materials - mainly paper - being in an architect's office... Well, anyway, I've been here for a year and am settled down... However, before I do a one-man-band and approach my boss about the idea of recycling - I just thought and stopped because I realised I needed 'you' - everyone else... I can't do it on my own...

I wonder if there are other people out there that feel the same way as I do... It's actually not good enough for Britain to make recycling a part of everyone's lifestyle - unfortunately it's a thing that has to be done on a global scale. And unfortunately, I think there is not a dedicated enough team out there - who can solely concentrate on this idea to make it happen... It should happen sooner rather than later - putting it off just means we will have to deal with it later - when it will be the next generation who take up our rubbish - perhaps they will be forced to live on landfill sites...

Anyway, I had better end it here - since I am running dry... I'm just someone who always had these thoughts in the back of my mind... Since I was a child and I first learnt where we put all our rubbish... It's not nice telling your child to tidy up and throw things in the bin - to then later tell them that we just dump it all in a big hole in the ground and then forget about it.

Yours sincerely,

Annie
